a forgotten post

(This post was saved as a draft and regretably, forgotten until 2 months later. Nevertheless, I feel that I should publish it for what little it is since every musing must have been accurate at the point of musing. Therefore, there is due credibility to this, even though it's long overdue.)
Chinese New Year is just around the corner. In fact, I am supposing that most employees in the private sector and schools are getting ready to call it a day and somersault in jubilance towards the long weekend.
What was it about CNY that made it a festival of great anticipation just 15-20 years ago, when I still unabashedly collected angbaos from every adult my mum brought us to meet? Was it the unlimited supply of CNY cookies and soft drinks, the new clothes and shoes (and pyjamas), the staying up to watch tv while gobbling those egg rolls, the spinning of the CNY candy canisters, the meeting up with other kiddy cousins? Or... what?
Fast forward to the present, CNY is becoming simpler and simpler. In both good ways and not-so-good. It's simpler-good so that we now know it's not really about the consumerism, but about the family-togetherness. It's simpler-not-so-good 'cos the excitement has plunged from enthusiasm about the festival to 'it's a long weekend!'
